The other day a local staffer came into the office wearing new glasses. I asked her how much they had cost, and she told me US$10.
I suddenly realized that many of the local people I saw around town and at meetings were wearing very fashionable glasses (to go with their cell phones). Well, now I know why.
Suppose you needed to have your eyes checked and you needed glasses. Here’s how the costs would stack up:
Consultation – 5 somoni
Glass Lenses – 10 somoni
Frames – US$10 (or 30 somoni)
TOTAL – 45 somoni, or US$15
And once you place your order, you can have your glasses in a couple of hours, and they will deliver them to you.
After paying between $100 and $200 for frames for my son, I think I smell an opportunity. I always thought sellers of eyeglasses in North America were money sharks selling for what the market would bear (plus), but now I know it. Anybody interested in getting into the import business? We could buy out a store a week here and make a killing.
